It was yet another wonderful week of fashion…this time at London Fashion Week! As LFW 2014 has ended, and Milan Fashion Week has begun, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights as well as some of the top trends that were seen on the British runways this past week.
•Topshop’s London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter show brought out a star-studded front row that would put most of the big-name designers to shame! Their colection was all about mixing English Heritage with a rebellious streak. Pretty floral dresses were paired with polo neck tops and knee-high suede boots, while delicate lace skirts were clashed with leather tops and sporty pieces.
•Vivian Westwood had chosen a Marilyn Monroe inspiration for her backstage beauty look for her models at her 2014 catwalk show. We were greeted by a troupe of sassy, red-lipped females that modeled shoulder pads and puffy heart-shaped lapels as if they had never gone out of fashion.
•TOGA, a celebrated Japanese brand and a newcomer to London Fashion week, making his debut appearance, presented the ultimate lesson in layering for autumn/ winter 2014. Pleats, printed organza and perfectly tailored oversized coats were his main pieces. Utility belts with cinched in waists offered a solution for all that volume, as well the perfect place to store your accessories, be it your leather gloves, a key chain or your horse hair whip….as seen in his show ; )
•Julien Macdonald has always been fond of “a bit of sparkle”…You go to his show expecting an explosion of glittering embellishment, overtly sexy shapes and exposure of as many body parts at one time as decency will allow. With this is mind, no one can argue that his latest collection didn’t live up to these expectations: Heavily and skillfully embellished chiffon gowns graced their way down the catwalk on high heels, each more spectacular and daring than the last. Macdonald has become a master of finding new ways to conceal and reveal the full spectrum of body parts -but in truth, his best moments are when he covers up more than he reveals.
•Bora Aksu showed he was ready for a romantic autumn using dark reds and bubblegum pink on high-necked, almost Victorian, dresses with full skirts. The models strutted down the runway to the sounds of a Turkish band – music hailing from the designer’s homeland – and Carla Bruni’s Quelqu’un M’a Dit. The models had their hair carefully styled into milkmaid braids. Comfort was key here, with oversized sleeves and socks paired with heels. Minimalism with a schoolgirl twist.
•Tom Ford’s catwalk featured Joan Smalls and a star turn by Stella Tennant. The collection was high voltage glamour – as you would expect from Mr. Ford and nothing less! And the front row of his fashion show was suitably fascinating, too. Our highlight? Anna Wintour – with a smirk on her face. Only Tom could make such magic happen ; )
There were many, many other wonderful designers and collections seen throughout the week. Through it all, we managed to capture a few of the top trends and themes seen at London Fashion Week 2014:
